QMJHL Playoffs Are Here! What To Expect From Each Maritime Club

Image
Photo: QMJHL Moncton NB: The QMJHL Playoffs are finally here, and this year's showcase features 5 out of 6 Maritime teams. Let's evaluate each Maritime team's expectations going into Round 1. Moncton Wildcats: This year has been historic to say the least for the Cats, as they have pretty well beaten all of the franchise's single-season records. The team finished with a 53-9-2 record, which topped the record for most wins in a season, previously held by the 2005-2006 team with 52 wins. This team also holds records for fewest regulation losses in a season (9), most points in a season (108), highest points percentage in a season (0.884%), and finally fewest goals against in a season (144). The key to the success seems to be newly hired head coach Gardiner MacDougall, who is one of New Brunswick's most successful coaches of all time, winning 9 USports championships with UNB, as well as winning the 2022 Memorial Cup with the Saint John Sea Dogs. The Cats enter the play...

NBIAA Hockey North-East Regionals Preview

Image
Moncton NB: Tonight is the start of the NBIAA Boys Hockey North-East Regionals. In Moncton, we've got some good hockey on our hands. We will preview some of the playoff matchups we will see this week.      Starting off with AAA regionals, we have the ESN Rebelles from Bathurst taking on the Mathieu-Martin Matadors from Dieppe. These two teams have had very strong seasons and have put on a show in their respective districts. For ESN, they ended the season with a 12-6-0-0 record. They are lead by Jacob Brideau who has 25 points in 18 games. For Mathieu Martin, they cap the season off with a 13-7-1-0 record. Caleb LeBlanc leads the team in points with 31 in 20 games. In league playoffs, the Matadors defeated L-J-R in 5 games. Alexis Gagnon played very well in the league playoffs with six points in 5 games. Game One will take place on Wednesday, March 12th in Beresford. Game Two is Friday, March 14th at the UNIplex in Dieppe. I predict a 2-1 series win fo...

Sea Dogs Sign Top 08' Prospect, Cameron Chartrand

Image
Photo: PuckPreps     Saint John NB: The Saint John Sea Dogs have reportedly signed 2008 born forward Cameron Chartrand. Sportsnet analyst Jeff Marek posted on X today breaking the news. Cameron was the team's 19th overall pick in the 2024 QMJHL Draft this past June.      Back in May, Cameron was ranked 5th on the QMJHL central scouting list, but fell back to 19th overall due to concerns with his intentions on playing in the NCAA. He has spent the majority of his 2024-2025 season with the Bishop Kearney Selects 16U AAA team, posting 42 points in 48 games played as the captain of that team. He has also played in two USHL games this season with the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders.     Cameron was a member of Team Canada at the World U17s, where he scored two points in four games. He is a prospect for the 2026 NHL Entry Draft.     Cameron made it clear that he wanted to play in the NCAA, taking the route through his 16U team in the United States ...

Maritimers On The Move! Brad Marchand Traded to Florida, Jacob Melanson's NHL Debut

Image
Photo: PressHerald      It has been quite the week for two Maritime athletes. For one, it was the beginning of a career. For the other, the beginning of a new chapter in an already well-decorated career.      Starting off with one of the biggest NHL Trade Deadline moves in recent history, the Brad Marchand trade. The Boston Bruins sent Halifax, Nova Scotia native and team captain Brad Marchand to the Florida Panthers in exchange for a conditional 2nd round pick. This trade took the hockey world by sort of a surprise as Brad had played his entire 16-year NHL career for the Bruins and has served as captain since 2023. He also played a major role in the team's 2011 Stanley Cup Championship. This trade, along with some other moves made by the Bruins today, marks the end of an era for the franchise. The Panthers have put together a very strong team this year and are on a mission to go for back-to-back Stanley Cup championships.      Brad wa...

Wildcats Dominate Top Team in the West, Titan Beat Mooseheads in OT.

Image
Photo: DanielStLouis      Moncton NB: The Moncton Wildcats took on the Drummondville Voltigeurs tonight in an absolute barn burner. The #1 ranked team in the east versus the #1 ranked team in the west. The big story line going into this one was that Rudy Guimond won the crease over Mathis Rousseau for this big game. We also saw the return of Dylan MacKinnon and Gabe Smith, both coming back from injuries.      The first was a very defensive battle with both teams unable to put one in the net. Shots were 13-11 after the first. Most notable moment of the period was when Dylan MacKinnon mixed things up a bit with David Bosson. The crowd got rowdy as MacKinnon fired them up.       The second was a different story. Moncton upped the physicality even more with a couple massive hits by Etienne Morin and Vincent Collard. 6:23 into the period Preston Lounsbury got the crowd on their feet. Gill and Johansson with the assists. Shortly after at...

DNA Swag Cup Playoff Preview

Image
Photos: Tanya Everett/Normand Leger Moncton NB: The DNA Swag Cup Playoffs are finally here and the cards are lining up for two fantastic series. We will be taking a deep dive into both matchups, as well as my predictions for them. Series 1: HTHS VS MHS In Moncton high school sports, there is no rivalry like Harrison Trimble and Moncton High. Typically known for their history of battles in football, we get to see it on the ice this time around. The Trojans have had quite the solid year, finishing with a (9-8-2-1) record. They had a very rocky start, losing 6 of their first 7, but started playing very good hockey after that. Recently, however, they have been in a bit of a slump as they are currently on a 4-game losing streak heading into the playoffs. Drew Betts leads the team in points with 38 in 20 games. His sister Annika has been very solid in net, posting a 0.895SV%. Some other standout players for the Trojans are Anson Benoite with 30 points in 20 games, captain Weston Steeves with...

The NBIAA Basketball Final 12 Was A Slam Dunk

Image
Photos: NBIAA Facebook Saint John NB: This weekend, the NBIAA Basketball Final 12 took place, and what a tournament it was! Six incredible games were played, and we are here to take a deep dive into each matchup. FRIDAY The weekend tipped off with the AA girls final which featured the Woodstock Thunder and the Miramichi Valley Pulamoo. The Thunder started off with a bang taking a 20-4 lead after the first, and kept the momentum going into halftime with a 30-15 lead over the Pulamoo. After halftime, the Valley started up the comeback train and got only 4 points back from Woodstock, but Rylee McCartney and the Thunder derailed that train and ended the game with a score of 51-38. Player of the game for the Thunder was Emma Saunders who had 5 points. Player of the game for the Pulamoo was Talya Larocque who had a game high 12 points.  The Friday night headliner was the AA boys final where we saw the Woodstock Thunder take on  École Saint-Anne Castors. One year ago, the Casto...
